Quick answer: For Lunar New Year, wrap in red, skip white and black, and avoid anything in fours; eight is lucky. Kwanzaa's colors are black, red and green. Hanukkah, Christmas and Diwali have familiar palettes but no fixed rule, and customs vary by family. For Ramadan and Eid, what is inside matters more than the wrap.
Wrap is the first thing anyone sees. The right color and count show you paid attention before the box is even open. Here is what to use and what to skip, holiday by holiday, with sources.

What colors and numbers suit Lunar New Year?
Red is the safe choice. In China it is the color of celebration and prosperity, and families decorate windows with red paper cuttings for the New Year, as the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art explains. Add gold if you like.
Skip white and black. White clothes have been the main symbol of mourning in China for more than 2,000 years, and black is now widely used for funerals in East Asia, especially in Japan, according to the Lam Museum of Anthropology at Wake Forest University.
Four sounds like the word for death in Mandarin and Cantonese, so avoid sets of four and prices or cash amounts with a 4. Eight sounds like fa, as in making a fortune, so it is the number to favor. In red envelopes, give crisp new bills in amounts with an 8 and no 4. For a Japanese recipient, add nine to the list: four and nine are pronounced like the words for death and suffering.
Our Prosperity Lunar New Year Box holds 8 items at $128, in red and gold. More in our Lunar New Year gift etiquette guide.
What should you wrap in for Diwali?
Diwali takes its name from dipavali, Sanskrit for a row of lights, and its five days are marked with lamps, rangoli, sweets, new clothes and gifts. Bright, warm colors suit a festival of light. There is no single rule and customs vary by family, so ask when in doubt.
Our Festival of Lights Diwali Gift Box comes in a red and gold keepsake box. Lakshmi Puja falls on Sun, Nov 8, 2026; order by Tue, Oct 27 for Standard delivery. See our Diwali gift ideas.
Are there Hanukkah colors?
No religious rule sets one. Blue and white make a good choice, with deep Jewish roots: the blue stripes of the flag that became Israel's were inspired by the stripes of the tallit, the prayer shawl. Silver works too. Keep Santas and Christmas trees off a Hanukkah gift; it is its own holiday.
Hanukkah runs eight nights, Dec 4 to 12 in 2026, which is why our Eight Nights Hanukkah Gift Box holds one gift for each night. More in Hanukkah gift ideas for all eight nights.
What colors go with Christmas and Kwanzaa?
Christmas red and green echo the plants of the season: holly, kept for its evergreen leaves and winter fruit, and the poinsettia, most often red. Gold and silver sit easily beside them. Running late? See our last-minute Christmas gifts for 2026.
Kwanzaa has fixed colors, set out on the official Kwanzaa website: black for the people, red for their struggle, and green for the future that comes from their struggle. Gifts, called zawadi, stand for the labor and love of parents and the commitments made and kept by children. Our Kwanzaa zawadi guide covers what to give.
Do Ramadan and Eid have gift colors?
No color is required, and customs vary by family. What matters more is what is inside and when it arrives. The Fiqh Council of North America dates Ramadan 2027 from Mon, Feb 8, with Eid al-Fitr on Tue, Mar 9. Eid is a time of visits, when presents are given and new clothes are worn.
Keep the contents free of alcohol. IFANCA, a US halal certifier, advises Muslims against non-alcoholic imitations too. Our Ramadan boxes are alcohol-free, with no gelatin, and carry a handwritten Ramadan Kareem card. See our Ramadan gift guide.
What colors work for weddings and sympathy gifts?
Weddings. At Chinese weddings, red is the wedding color, from dresses and candles to envelopes and lanterns, while white belongs to mourning. Put cash in a red envelope and skip any amount with a 4. At Jewish weddings and b'nei mitzvah, gifts in multiples of 18 are common, because 18 is the numerical value of chai, the Hebrew word for life.
Sympathy. Keep the wrap plain. White is the traditional color of mourning in China, and black is widely used for funerals in Japan. For a Jewish family sitting shiva, food is the customary thing to bring, and little else; if the family keeps kosher, choose food with a certification you can confirm.
