Quick answer: Choose an alcohol-free gift when you are not sure the recipient drinks, and always for Ramadan and Eid, pregnancy, recovery or a workplace that limits alcohol. Only 54% of US adults say they drink (Gallup, 2026). Read labels: on beer, "non-alcoholic" means less than 0.5% alcohol by volume, while "alcohol free" means none.
An alcohol-free gift is not a lesser gift. It is often the more thoughtful one, because it works for anyone at the table. Here is when to choose one, what the labels mean, and which of our boxes contain no alcohol at all.
| Fact | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| US adults who say they drink | 54% in 2026, tied with 2025 for the lowest since 1939 | Gallup, Aug 20, 2026 |
| Adults 18 to 34 who say they drink | 50%, down from 58% in 2023 | Gallup |
| Adults who chose a nonalcoholic beer, wine or spirit instead of alcohol in the past year | 17% | Gallup |
| Adults who say one or two drinks a day is bad for health | 51% | Gallup |
| Known safe amount of alcohol in pregnancy | None | CDC |
| "Non-alcoholic" on a beer label | Less than 0.5% alcohol by volume | 27 CFR 7.65(e) |
| "Alcohol free" on a beer label | No alcohol | 27 CFR 7.65(f) |
When is an alcohol-free gift the right choice?
Whenever you are not sure. And in these cases, always:
- Ramadan and Eid. IFANCA, a US halal certifier, cites the Quran's ban on intoxicants and advises Muslims to avoid non-alcoholic imitations and lookalikes as well. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin Mon, Feb 8.
- Diwali. The festival of lights is marked with lamps, sweets and gifts, and our Diwali boxes are vegetarian and alcohol-free. Lakshmi Puja falls on Sun, Nov 8, 2026.
- Pregnancy. The CDC says there is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy or while trying to get pregnant.
- Recovery. Ask before you send anything that looks or tastes like a drink. A "non-alcoholic" beer can still contain a little alcohol.
- Drivers and early risers. A host gift may be opened that night, so make it one everyone can share.
- Offices and clients. An employer may limit alcohol at work. Our client gift etiquette guide covers the other rules that cap gifts.
How many Americans are skipping alcohol?
In Gallup's July 2026 survey of 1,200 adults, 54% said they drink, matching 2025 as the lowest share since Gallup began asking in 1939. The rate fell from 62% in 2023 to 58% in 2024 and 54% in 2025, then held. Among adults 18 to 34, it fell from 58% in 2023 to 50%.
Views on health have shifted too: 51% now say one or two drinks a day is bad for you. And 17% say they chose a nonalcoholic beer, wine or spirit instead of an alcoholic drink in the past year. Put simply, nearly half of US adults say they do not drink.
What is the difference between non-alcoholic and alcohol-free?
For beer, federal labeling rules are exact. "Non-alcoholic" may appear only with the statement that the drink contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume, and "alcohol free" may be used only when it contains no alcohol at all (27 CFR 7.65).
That gap matters. For pregnancy, recovery or religious observance, a gift with no drinks in it avoids the question. For a drinker taking a break, a good non-alcoholic sparkling wine or spirit is a thoughtful swap.
Our product pages keep the same distinction. Four boxes contain no alcohol, and their dietary line says so. Four more hold non-alcoholic drinks at or under 0.5% ABV: The Zero-Proof Bar Gift Box ($128), The Midnight Toast New Year's Box ($138), The Newlyweds Gift Trunk ($215) and The Heart of Gold Valentine's Trunk ($265).
How do you present a zero-proof gift?
- Make it the gift, not the exception. Skip notes like "since you don't drink." Write about the occasion instead.
- Add the ritual. Glassware, a jigger and recipe cards turn a bottle into an evening. Our Zero-Proof Bar Gift Box pairs a non-alcoholic spirit with cocktail syrup, citrus shrub, a jigger and printed recipes.
- Pair it with food. Dates, chocolate or good tea carry a celebration on their own.
- Say what it is. Write "alcohol-free" or "non-alcoholic" on the card, so no one has to check a label at the table.

Can I give non-alcoholic wine to a Muslim friend?
Choose something else. IFANCA advises Muslims to avoid non-alcoholic imitations of alcoholic drinks, so dates, tea or sweets are the safer gift. Customs vary by family.
Is non-alcoholic beer safe during pregnancy?
