Kwanzaa 2026 (Dec 26 to Jan 1): Zawadi Gift Etiquette and the Seven Principles

By Published Updated 6 min read

Quick answer: Kwanzaa 2026 runs from Saturday, December 26, to Friday, January 1, one principle for each day. Zawadi, the gifts of Kwanzaa, go mainly to children, and the official Kwanzaa website says they "must always include a book and a heritage symbol." For a box delivered by December 24, order by Tuesday, December 15.

The seven days of Kwanzaa 2026 and their principles
Date Principle In brief
Sat, Dec 26 Umoja (Unity) Unity in the family, community, nation and race
Sun, Dec 27 Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) A people defining, naming and speaking for themselves
Mon, Dec 28 Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) Building the community together and solving its problems together
Tue, Dec 29 Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) Building and supporting the community's own stores and businesses
Wed, Dec 30 Nia (Purpose) Making the building of the community a shared calling
Thu, Dec 31 Kuumba (Creativity) Doing all one can to leave the community more beautiful. The karamu feast is held this day.
Fri, Jan 1 Imani (Faith) Faith in the people, parents, teachers, leaders and the struggle. Also the Day of Meditation.

When is Kwanzaa 2026?

Kwanzaa begins on Saturday, December 26, 2026, and ends on Friday, January 1, 2027. Maulana Karenga created it in 1966, and the Organization Us, its founding organization, keeps the Official Kwanzaa Website as the reference for its practice.

Each day centers on one of the Nguzo Saba, the seven principles. The daily greeting is "Habari gani?", and the answer is that day's principle. The karamu, a feast, is held on December 31, and the last day, January 1, is the Day of Meditation, Siku ya Taamuli. The official FAQ is clear that Kwanzaa is not an alternative to anyone's religion but "a common ground of African culture."

What are the seven principles of Kwanzaa?

In order, they are Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). The table above gives each day and a short summary; the official website gives the full definition of each.

During the week, the Mishumaa Saba, seven candles, stand in the kinara: one black, three red and three green.

What are zawadi, and who receives them?

Zawadi are the gifts of Kwanzaa. The official website sets the rule in one sentence: "Gifts are given mainly to children, but must always include a book and a heritage symbol." The book stands for the value of learning. The heritage symbol affirms a commitment to tradition and history.

As one of the seven symbols of Kwanzaa, zawadi stand for the labor and love of parents and for the commitments children make and keep. The official page on children warns that reducing children "to mere recipients of gifts" repeats one of the most negative parts of some Christmas celebrations. The point is one meaningful gift, not a pile.

For a heritage symbol, the official website's list of decorations is a useful guide: African baskets, cloth patterns, art objects and harvest symbols.

When are Kwanzaa gifts given?

At the end of the week. The karamu is held on December 31, and timeanddate.com describes Kwanzaa as a week of celebrations that "ends with a feast and the exchange of gifts." Families set their own timing, so follow the host's lead.

If you are shipping a gift, have it arrive before the first day. We plan Kwanzaa deliveries for Thursday, December 24: order by Tuesday, December 15 with Standard shipping or Friday, December 18 with Express. For carrier cutoffs on packages you send yourself, see our holiday shipping deadlines for 2026.

Can you give a Kwanzaa gift if you do not celebrate?

Yes, with care. The official FAQ says, "Kwanzaa is clearly an African holiday created for African peoples. But other people can and do celebrate it." It adds that "particular people should always be in control of and conduct their own celebrations."

For a friend, colleague or neighbor, that means a guest's gift: something for the table or the household, with a card that names a principle. Leave the children's zawadi to their parents, since the gifts carry the parents' own commitments, and ask before adding a book of your own.

What makes a good Kwanzaa gift for adults and hosts?

Let the principles choose it. A book serves learning. A piece of art or cloth serves heritage. Something made by hand fits Kuumba, which the official website defines as doing as much as we can "to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it." A purchase from a Black-owned business serves Ujamaa, cooperative economics.

On that last point, the official FAQ separates the cooperative work of artists and vendors who supply Kwanzaa materials from corporate efforts to "penetrate and dominate the community Kwanzaa market." We take that seriously. We are a small gift shop in Lynn, Massachusetts, and we do not describe our Kwanzaa box as Black-owned or handmade, because we cannot document either for every item. If supporting Black-owned makers is part of your gift, buy the book and the heritage symbol from Black-owned bookstores and artists.

For color, use the colors of Kwanzaa, black, red and green: "black for the people, red for their struggle, and green for the future and hope that comes from their struggle."

  • The Kuumba Kwanzaa Gift Box, $118, 6 gifts: a ceramic bowl, an 8 oz candle in a seasonal scent, raw honey, a linen journal and brass pen, a Kwanzaa greeting card and a keepsake box with a handwritten note. It is a gift for an adult or a household, named for the sixth principle, with the journal for the year that starts on January 1. It holds no book or heritage symbol, so on its own it is not a child's zawadi. No major allergens are listed; the one food is raw honey.
  • The Letter Writer's Gift Box, $68, 5 gifts: letterpress cards, a wax seal kit, a brass pen and a mini candle. Not a Kwanzaa box, but a creative one for the relative who writes to the whole family.
  • Exclusive Gift House E-Gift Card, $50 to $500, delivered by email, for any date after December 18.
