When is Boss's Day 2026, and where did it start?
National Boss's Day is October 16, and in 2026 it falls on a Friday. According to Hallmark, it began in 1958, when Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance in Deerfield, Illinois, registered the day with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She chose October 16, her father's birthday, because she thought he was an exemplary boss. He was also her employer.
In 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed the registration and proclaimed the day. When October 16 lands on a weekend, it is observed on the closest work day. Hallmark first printed Boss Day cards in 1979.
Is it appropriate to give your boss a gift?
A gift from one employee can go wrong. In its advice on workplace gifts, The Emily Post Institute answers the question "Should I give my boss a holiday gift?" with "Generally, no. It could easily be perceived as trying to win favor."
The same answer makes room for the team: "a pooled gift from you and other employees that isn't too expensive or personal is fine." So the clean options are a card from you, a share in a group gift, or both. If your company has a gift policy, follow it first.
Should the team give one group gift or individual gifts?
One group gift. Emily Post puts it plainly: "The best way to give to a boss or supervisor is as a department or group." Here is how to run it without awkwardness.
- Name one organizer and one deadline. Collect by Monday, October 5, and the order can go in by our Standard date, Tuesday, October 6.
- Keep contributions private. Emily Post suggests an envelope at your desk "for anonymous contributions."
- Suggest an amount, never require one. In Emily Post's words, "It's okay to suggest an amount, but let it be known that the amount and even participation is entirely up to the individual."
- Buy one gift and one card. Everyone signs the card, including the people who did not chip in.
How much should you spend on a Boss's Day gift?
Emily Post gives no dollar figure. The guidance is modest: a group gift that is not too expensive and not personal. The fair way to set the number is to pick the gift first, then divide by the size of the team.
At about $14 a person, the math works for each of our three Boss's Day boxes, before shipping and sales tax:
- 5 people: The Thank-You Note Gift Box, $68.
- 10 people: The Corner Office Gift Box, $138.
- 20 people: The Boardroom Client Gift Trunk, $265.
A small team with a tight budget has another correct answer: a card that everyone signs, with no gift at all.
What should you write in a Boss's Day card?
Thank them for something specific. A concrete line reads as sincere, while praise for their personality can read as flattery. Keep it short, keep it about work, and sign it from the team.
- "Thank you for the Friday check-ins. They made a hard quarter manageable. From the whole team."
- "Thank you for backing us in the budget review. We noticed, and we are grateful."
- "For the coffee you never let the office run out of. Happy Boss's Day, from all of us."
Our gift message takes up to 200 characters, and we write it by hand on the card inside the box.
What are good Boss's Day gifts by budget?
Emily Post's list of safe office gifts includes "fine pens" and "shareable sweets and consumables like nuts." It also advises choosing food over alcohol and avoiding personal items such as perfume, cologne or pajamas. Our three Boss's Day boxes follow those lines, and none of them contains alcohol.
- Under $75: The Thank-You Note Gift Box, $68, 5 gifts. A 12 oz bag of specialty coffee, a chocolate bar duo, a cedar and fig mini candle and a handwritten note card, in a keepsake box. Contains milk and soy.
