How to Build a Luxury Boo Basket: 12 Ideas and the Order-By Date

By Published Updated 4 min read

A boo basket is a Halloween surprise: a basket of treats left on a neighbor's doorstep or sent to a friend, usually with a "You've Been Booed" sign so they can pass the fun along. The grown-up version swaps plastic trinkets for things people actually enjoy, like a smoky candle, good chocolate and warm socks.

Halloween 2026 falls on Saturday, October 31. We plan delivery by Friday, October 30, so the basket is there for the weekend. Order by Wed, Oct 21 with Standard shipping or Tue, Oct 27 with Express.

Two boxes that are already a boo basket

If you would rather not assemble one yourself, we built two. Both are packed by hand in Lynn, Massachusetts, and both include a handwritten note.

Box Items Price Order by
The Little Boo Box 5 $68 Standard: Wed, Oct 21. Express: Tue, Oct 27.
The Midnight Boo Basket 8 $128 Standard: Wed, Oct 21. Express: Tue, Oct 27.
The Thinking of You Care Box 5 $78 Standard: Wed, Oct 21. Express: Tue, Oct 27.

The Little Boo Box ($68) holds a smoked vanilla mini candle, a dark chocolate bar, hot cocoa and marshmallows and a "You've Been Booed" card, packed in a black keepsake box. Contains milk and soy.

The Midnight Boo Basket ($128) is the full version: an 8 oz smoked amber candle in black glass, nine chocolate truffles, salted caramels, merino wool socks, hot cocoa and marshmallows, spiced shortbread and a card, in a keepsake box. Contains milk, soy and wheat.

The Thinking of You Care Box ($78) is for the friend who would rather skip the spooky part: chamomile tea, raw honey, a soft-scented mini candle, shortbread and a card. Contains wheat and milk.

12 ideas for a luxury boo basket

  1. Start with a dark, smoky candle. Smoked amber or smoked vanilla smells like October and still works on a mantel in December. A candle in black glass looks the part on a porch.
  2. Add real chocolate truffles. Nine truffles feel generous without being a sugar crash, and they look good the moment the lid comes off.
  3. Include one dark chocolate bar. For the person who likes their chocolate plain and bitter.
  4. Tuck in salted caramels. They keep well, travel well and please both kids and adults.
  5. Bring hot cocoa and marshmallows. Late October nights turn cold, and cocoa turns the basket into an evening plan.
  6. Add merino wool socks. One useful, cozy thing makes the basket feel considered rather than just sweet.
  7. Choose shelf-stable spiced shortbread. It survives shipping and a few days on a counter, unlike frosted cupcakes.
  8. Use a black keepsake box instead of a plastic pail. The box outlives Halloween as storage for letters, photos or tea.
  9. Keep to a color story. Black, amber and gold look deliberate. Too many bright colors look like leftover party supplies.
  10. Include the "You've Been Booed" card. The sign goes in the window so the house is not booed twice, and the note asks them to boo two more neighbors.
  11. Write the note by hand. Sign it, or keep the mystery and let them guess. Our gift options take up to 200 characters, and we write the message by hand.
  12. Time it for Friday. A basket that arrives Friday, October 30, gets opened before the weekend's parties and trick-or-treating, not after.

Boo basket etiquette

The tradition is simple. You leave a basket for someone, often anonymously, with the "You've Been Booed" sign and instructions. They put the sign in a window and pass the favor on to two other households, usually within a day or two.

A few practical notes:

  • Know the household. If there are allergies, check the labels. Our boxes list allergens on each product page, and full ingredient labels are inside.
  • Think about pets. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, so a porch drop-off for a dog-owning household should not sit on the step for long.
  • Shipping to another city. The carrier does the doorstep part. Add a note that explains the game so the recipient knows to pass it on.
  • Make it grown-up. Boo baskets are often a family tradition, but a candle and truffles make one a fitting gift for a friend, a neighbor or a colleague.

Why we built them this way

We chose one anchor for each box. In the Midnight Boo Basket it is the smoked amber candle in black glass, because a good candle is what people keep using after the chocolate is gone. The socks are there for the same reason. In the Little Boo Box, the black keepsake box does that work: it turns a $68 gift into something that stays on a shelf.

We left out anything that only makes sense on October 31. Apart from the booed card, every item in both boxes is still useful in November, which is how a Halloween gift avoids the trash can.

See both boxes in our Halloween gifts and boo baskets collection. For every other holiday this season, the dates are on our order-by dates page. Missed the Express date? The Exclusive Gift House E-Gift Card arrives by email.
